TL; DR: So, I was thinking that this is based on the Central American concept of sacrificing...along with some Egyptian concepts
The mountains have provided shelter and protection to the Nublestia packs. She was their life source, providing water, food, shelter, natural defenses, etc, etc. Little wonder did they began calling her Mother Mountain.
However, it was only a twist of fate that the High Priest had a vision of Mother Mountain's wrath descending upon the pack if blood was not given on a monthly basis.
Thus began the tradition of sacrificing war victims and selected dogs to the gods.
The pantheon of gods is located in Tengger, the sky kingdom, and where the souls of the dead journey to.
Aconcagua-Mother Mountain is the highest god of the pantheon. Her priests are the most powerful in the land. Her festival is happens in the first day of the third moon of the year. To appease her, young pups are left out on the mountains to freeze and die. They are said to be raised by Aconcagua as one of her own. She is symbolized by a mountain with a waterfall running through it.
Quetzalcoatl-Father Sky also known as Storm Dragon and Feathered Serpent, is the mate of Aconcagua. He is also very important, as he is the controller of the weather and so, precious water. His rains in the mountains brings a flood into the lower valley. Quetzalcoatl is represented by a feathered serpent. He is celebrated along with Aconcagua, and sacrifices are drowned in order to ensure a good year. The constellation Draco is said to represent one of his earthly forms when he was incarnated.
Amun-Ra-Lord of Fire is one of the offspring of Aconcagua and Quetzalcoatl. He controls all aspects of the element of fire, namely the sun and the volcanoes of Nublestia. He is symbolized by a hawk. His festival is on the seventh moon of the year. Sacrifices are thrown into a volcano. If they make it out alive, they are said to be an incarnation of Amun-Ra on earth.
Harmachis-Lord of the Wind is another offspring of Aconcagua and Quetzalcoatl. He controls the wind, and is often represented by the falcon. The protector of royalty, his festival is on the fourth moon of the year.
Lupa-Creator of the World is the goddess of canines. She is said to have given birth to the canines. Lupa is represented by a star pelted wolf. She is the mate of Harmachis. Lupa's festival is the new year.
Geb-God of Life is the fertility figure. He is the son of Lupa, and has created all the flora and fauna in the world to provide for the canines. Symbolized by a llama, his festival is on the eleventh moon of the year. As he is the god of life, no one is killed.
Set-Lord of Death is another son of Lupa, brother to Geb. He is symbolized as a vulture and a strange creature. His vulture familiars are said to fly the souls of the dead up to Tengger upon their wings. His festival is on the last day of the old year.
Coatliq-Lady of the Stars is the goddess of the night sky, manifesting the form of the moon and stars. To reward heroes, Coatliq would take their image and fit them into the stars. Being the goddess of the moon, she is the keeper of time, and being a goddess of the stars, her children, she is the fate goddess. She is Quetzalcoatl's sister.
When a dog dies, the easiest way to reach Tengger is to leave the body out in the mountains for the vultures to eat. This is called a sky funeral.
However, if you are powerful enough, you may command a cave to be found and your body will in interred there after being embalmed by the brotherhood of Set.
